Weekend video: Iceland’s PM talks upcoming EU referendum on the Rest is Politics
With Iceland three weeks out from a referendum on whether to resume EU accession talks, Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir sat down with Alastair Campbell and Rory Stewart for The Rest Is Politics: Leading. The episode, titled “The vote that could reshape Iceland”.
For Arctic watchers, the more interesting starts around minute 22 of the conversation, where she connects the vote to Iceland’s position in the GIUK gap, growing great-power attention on Greenland, and what a NATO member with no armed forces of its own can bring to a European security conversation. She also talks about fisheries, the cost of running the króna and how she rebuilt the social democratic Samfylkingin from 5.6 percent in 2016 to the country’s biggest party.
