The U.S. Department of Justice has issued subpoenas in an investigation into whether a Senate candidate in Alaska with the same name as a Republican incumbent entered the race to confuse voters, according to a source familiar with the probe.

The grand jury subpoenas are part of a federal probe into the candidacy of Dan J. Sullivan, who is running against incumbent Dan S. Sullivan, the source said.

Both candidates are running in the state’s nonpartisan Senate primary on Tuesday. The top four candidates will advance to the November election, which could cause further headaches for Senator Dan S. Sullivan if challenger Dan J. Sullivan makes the cut.

The subpoenas were first reported by NBC News.

An investigation does not always result in criminal charges.

Dan J. Sullivan has denied in interviews with U.S. news outlets that his aim is to cause confusion or divert votes from Dan S. Sullivan.
