Rosatom hints it may need fewer icebreakers for the Northern Sea Route

With the improvement of icebreaking LNG tanker technology, the route may require less icebreaking capacity.

The head of Rosatom’s Northern Sea Route Directorate says three powerful nuclear icebreakers will be able to keep the whole Arctic shipping corridor open through the winter and spring season. Previously, the company insisted it needed six such vessels for the job.
