Putin calls Arctic fuel spill unprecedented for Russia

The environmental group Greenpeace estimates the spill will cause some $1.4 billion worth of damage, some of which they blamed on a slow emergency response.

MOSCOW — Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday that the scale of a clean-up operation after a huge fuel spill in the Arctic was unprecedented for Russia, even as Greenpeace estimated the environmental damage to waters in the region at $1.4 billion.
